Challenging Unfair Practices in School Board Decisions
Tonight I had the privilege of interviewing for a vacant seat on the South Haven School Board. This was an opportunity to further my lifelong dedication to education and give back to the community I love. However, the process revealed troubling concerns that I feel compelled to share.
Three candidates, including myself, were invited to participate in public interviews. Each of us answered questions from the board and shared our ideas for improving the district. However, after our interviews concluded, the board introduced a fourth candidate—someone who had not participated in the public process. This individual, who was disqualified during the recent election and ranked below me in voter preference, was allowed to submit written responses that were briefly reviewed during the meeting.
Ultimately, the board selected this individual for the position, raising serious questions about the fairness and transparency of the process. One board member courageously stood up to question this decision, voting for me and pointing out that I, as the fourth-highest vote earner, should have been offered the position.
My husband, who attended the meeting, also expressed dissatisfaction with the board’s decision and the irregularities in the process. His support and advocacy mean the world to me, and his voice amplified the concerns shared by many community members.
As someone who has dedicated her life to education, I believe in the importance of democracy, equity, and accountability. This experience has reinforced my commitment to these values. While I am disappointed by the outcome, I am motivated to continue serving South Haven in meaningful ways.
To the residents of South Haven: thank you for believing in me and for supporting my vision for a brighter future in education. Together, we can ensure that every student and every voice matters.
Sincerely,
Dr. Leta Covington
